What you
see here is a "Computer Dokan", i.e., a store where people
can come to use a computer. Generally customers are youngsters,
mostly boys, rarely girls. They pay 40 taka (40 cents
of euro) per hour; generally three, four or five guys go Dutch. What do
they do in that hour? Listen to music or watch video
clips (Bangladeshis, Indians or Western, in that order of
preference). If the store is connected to the Internet,
then Facebook is the favorite. I have already opened Facebook accounts for
more than a dozen kids who come to my computer because
the connection of the stores is usually very slow, because they
do not understand enough English to fill in the registration
questionnaire, and because it is free, of course. But their
behavior on Facebook is more or less like all the world's
youth: the more friends the better, even if they
don’t know them; uploading pictures and looking at others’ photos. I
would show them how to make a better use of these gadgets called computers, and
help them to get more out of this extraordinary tool.
